Residential Window Tinting: The Pros And Cons

Posted on

We're used to tinting our vehicle's windows but what about the windows of our homes? Residential window tints can be a great option for blocking UV rays, reflecting sunlight, and improving energy efficiency. But is tinting right for your home? Here are a few of the pros and cons you should consider before tinting.

PROS

Increased Energy Savings

One of the benefits of home window tinting is the opportunity to increase your energy savings and decrease energy usage at the same time. UV blocking tints will help keep heat out during the hot summer months. You'll notice the savings on your energy bill because you can cut your bill by as much as 30% by tinting your windows.

Daytime Privacy

Another major benefit of window tinting on your home is increased privacy. This is especially beneficial if you live in an urban area or suburban area with homes in close proximity to each other. Knowing your windows are tinted and therefore obscuring the view inside your home to casual observes gives great peace of mind.

UV Protection

A tint with UV protection helps increase energy efficiency in your home but it also protects any textiles next to your windows by blocking UV rays. UV rays are infamous for causing severe fading of any textiles that sunlight can reach through your windows including rugs, carpets, and even artwork.

Curb Appeal

You can choose a residential window tint with a slightly darkened or reflective effect that can create aesthetics and therefore great curb appeal for your home.

CONS

No Nighttime Privacy

Although tinting is great for increasing privacy during the day, once the sun goes down, it's not as effective. That's because it won't block observers from seeing into your home once it's dark outside and you're backlit from the interior of your home.

Obstructs Winter Heat

Although tinting can improve efficiency in hot climates, it doesn't do as well in cold climates. In the winter months, the heat coming in through the windows can help warm your home. But tinted windows will continue to block UV rays and heat in the winter too.

Changes View

Another disadvantage of window tinting is that some tinting films will slightly darken the window and therefore change your view from the window. Although the change will be minimal, it can still alter the natural light coming through the window. However, newer and more advanced tinting films may be able to avoid that problem but the price might be steeper.
