Tips To Help Keep Your Auto Glass Looking Great

Posted on

You probably don't spend a ton of time thinking about your auto glass, but it's literally the window through which you see the road ahead of you, so it's a good idea to do what you can to keep your auto glass in good condition. To that end, here are some tips to help you avoid cracks and other significant damage to your car's windshield.

Change Your Windshield Wipers on a Regular Basis

Dirty windshield wipers will leave you with a smeared windshield that does not provide an optimal view for driving. If you let your wipers get especially dirty or allow them to badly deteriorate, it's also possible that you could develop a scratch on your windshield over time. Get into the habit of changing your windshield wipers every three months or every time you do an oil change. This will help keep your view through the windshield clean and unobstructed.

Stay Back, Especially When Trucks Are Involved

One of the most common ways that windshields sustain cracks or other damage is when a rock or some other piece of debris kicks up from the road in front of you and goes flying into your car. This is the number-one reason why you should maintain a safe driving distance between yourself and the vehicles in front of you on the road. You will want to pay special attention if there is a big rig or another large vehicle in front of you, as these vehicles are known for kicking back debris at high velocity. In other words, don't expect the truck's mud flaps to save you. Keep your distance at all times so you have time to react if you see something coming towards you.

Don't Get Too Aggressive With Ice

Finally, another way that many drivers end up damaging their windshield is by getting way too aggressive when trying to remove ice from their windshield. Your ice scraper is just that: a scraper. It is not a hammer, in other words. Use gentle strokes when removing ice with a scraper and avoid pounding the glass to try and break the ice up. You also should never dump hot water on your cold windshield to try and speed up the melting process as the sudden change in temperatures could cause a reaction that cracks your glass.
